Norton Commando – The Essential Buyer’s Guide
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsTHERE are lots of books about the Norton Commando; about its history, performance, lineage, and the minutiae of its specification. But none of them will tell you what to look for when buying one secondhand. That’s what this book is about – it is a straightforward, practical guide to buying a used Commando. It doesn’t list all the correct colour combinations for each year, or analyse the bike’s design philosophy, or consider its background as part of a troubled industry – there are excellent books listed at the end of this one that do all of that – but it will help you avoid buying a dud.
Point by point, it takes the reader through everything that needs looking at when buying a Commando, plus spares prices, which is the best model to buy for your needs, and a look at auctions, restorations and paperwork.
So don’t buy a Commando without buying this book first!
Having this book in your pocket is just like having a real marque expert by your side. Benefit from Peter Henshaw’s years of experience; learn how to spot a bad Norton Commando quickly, and how to assess a promising one like a professional.
These bikes are the last of the ‘classic’ Nortons, and remain collector’s items, and many have been saved, restored and returned to the road in superb condition. This book, which is available now from bookshops or www.velocebooks.com , will show you how to get the right bike at the right price.

1,200 hp Bugatti Super Veyron. Is it on?
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsBugatti lovers listen up!
Rumors that have been floating regarding an upgraded Veyron could actually start coming true. Or was it our prayers?
Sources tell us that Ferdinand Piech who was the former Volkswagen chairman or better known as the Father of Bugatti revealed that Bugatti is planning to come out with a 1,200 horsepower “Super Veyron” while delivering a lecture at Vienna University of Technology recently. Although he did not reveal any more details, it seems now that Bugatti are finally planning to bring the much-anticipated “Super Veyron” to life.
The current Bugatti Veyron has an output of 1,001 hp and it no big secret that its quad-turbocharged, sixteen-cylinder engine is capable of much more and a modified version of this engine could easily develop up to 1,200 horses.
It is understood that if anyone who would know about the new Bugatti in the world, Mr Piech would definitely be one of them.
Also taking into consideration that it is time to close the production run of the existing Bugatti, this surely could be the best period to launch a 1,200 hp Bugatti Super Veyron.

SUPERCHIPS UNLEASHES THE BMW 135i’S REAL DRIVING MACHINE
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsThanks to its combination of small size and powerful 3.0-litre six cylinder twin turbocharged engine, BMW’s 135i has attracted a loyal following amongst owners and the motoring press.
Which is why Buckingham based Superchips Ltd, the market leading specialist in performance electronic tuning, is pleased to unveil a performance boosting ECU remap for the 135i.
The result of extensive investigation into the BMW’s Siemens MSD ECU parameters, Superchip’s highly experienced technicians successfully identified several performance enhancement opportunities with the original factory settings, enabling the company to refine the 135i’s ECU map to meet the needs of the BMW driving enthusiast who demands a sharper, more exciting drive.
Careful optimisation of ignition, fuelling and turbo boost settings via combination of extensive chassis dyno testing and road validation has produced a Superchips remap that elevates the performance of the 135i onto a different plane.
As measured on its in house four wheel drive chassis dyno’, the Superchips upgrade boosts the BMW 135i’s peak power from a tested standard output of 315 bhp, to a mighty 360 bhp, with a maximum power gain of 49 bhp at 5989 rpm.
The Superchips ECU remap also significantly enhances the 135i’s torque output, rising from a measured 394 Nm to an impressive 456 Nm at just 3359 rpm, with maximum gain of 70 Nm at just 3267 rpm.
Compared to the standard BMW 135i, the Superchips upgraded car produces peak torque over 1000 rpm lower down in the rev range, making it not only ultimately faster, but also significantly easier to drive.
Although not yet tested against the clock, the Superchips remapped BMW 135i is expected to better the standard car’s 5.3 second 0-60 mph sprint time, although for safety reasons the 155 mph speed limiter is left untouched.
Installation of the Superchips ECU remap entails customers visiting one of approximately 100 Superchips dealerships in the UK who will undertake the remap procedure.
Suitable for both manual and automatic transmission variants of BMW 135i produced from 2007 onwards, the Superchips ECU remap is available now both directly from Superchips and its UK dealer network, priced at £445.00 including VAT @ 17.5%.

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS AND SPRINTER RETAIN THEIR FLEET WORLD HONOURS
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsThe Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been crowned Best Luxury Car at the 2010 Fleet World Honours and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter scooped Best Large Van. Both vehicles retained their awards from 2009, whilst Sprinter now enjoys a three-year reign.
The Best Luxury Car award for the S-Class was presented to Adrian Freeman, Regional Corporate Sales Manager for Mercedes-Benz UKat a special ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall on Tuesday 18 May.
Steve Moody, Editor of Fleet World commented: “The luxury sector is about to become even more competitive, but all new entrants have one model to beat, a model that continues to define the very best in corporate motoring and luxury: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. New more efficient engines have made the line-up even more formidable than ever before.”
The Mercedes-Benz S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which accounts for 92 per cent of fleet sales, returns an impressive 37.2 mpg on the combined cycle whilst emitting just 199 g/km of CO2 and later in 2010 will become even cleaner and more efficient. With the introduction of the S 350 BlueTEC, Mercedes-Benz will be the first manufacturer to offer a vehicle that already meets EU 6 standards that don’t come into effect in the UK until 2014.
The unique BlueTEC technology significantly reduces the only gas constituents that are higher in diesel engines than in petrol engines, therefore reducing emissions and improving efficiency.
Many features of the S-Class are unique and remain unrivalled by competitors. New safety features making the S-Class one of the safest cars on the road.
Adaptive Highbeam is now standard on the S-Class and uses eight stages of graduation from dipped to main beam to ensure that maximum visible range from the headlights is available at all time, without dazzling other road users. Another unique standard feature of the S-Class is Attention Assist which monitors over 70 parameters to detect the onset of drowsiness so it can alert the driver to take a break, crucially, before they fall asleep.
Torque vectoring brakes ensure precise cornering without compromising driving dynamics, while Distronic Plus significantly reduces driver strain in start stop traffic through the use of long and medium range radars by keeping the car a set distance from the vehicle in front.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to impress and be the envy of the boardroom as the halo company car for others to aspire to.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter also delighted the judges, winning the Best Large Van award.
Steve Bridge, Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales and Marketing Director said: “The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has held the accolade of Best Large Van since 2008, and we’re thrilled it has retained its title again in 2010. The vehicle has repeatedly set standards by offering the van fleet market low whole life costs, excellent fuel economy and a firm commitment to safety.”
Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to achieve Euro 5 – as well as being cleaner, the new Sprinters are smoother, quieter and more powerful, along with being significantly cheaper to run. And, with low fuel consumption and low emissions becoming increasingly important considerations for the van fleet buyer, the Sprinter can also be fitted with the ECO-Start system. This innovative system saves fuel and reduces emissions by automatically cutting the engine whenever the vehicle is stationary for more than three seconds and then re-starts it as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed.
All Sprinters come equipped with class and industry leading levels of passive and active safety. The Adaptive ESP (Electronic Stability Program) anti-skid system constantly monitors the vehicles adjusting load, centre of gravity and yaw angles and dynamically adjusts the brakes, supplying maximum effect, while the vehicle is on the move.
