  • Aston Martin’s Design Director, Marek Reichman is to embark on his maiden race in a Vantage GT4 competing in the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain at Oulton Park on Saturday 21 August.

Marek, who is a keen motorsport enthusiast and regular competitor in historic club racing, will share driving duties with Aston Martin Engineering Manager, Chris Porritt; himself an experienced GT4 racer for the 90-minute race on the notoriously challenging Cheshire circuit later this month.

Speaking ahead of the race, Marek said: “The design team has been closely involved in the design of all our race cars, from the works LMP1 prototype to the Vantage GT4, but I’ve always longed to get even more closely involved and the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge provides the perfect introduction to GT4 racing for me.”

The Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain is a one make series exclusively for owners of the Vantage GT4 and the Vantage N24. The races are between 90 and 150 minutes in length with practice, qualifying and the race all in the same day. The series is the perfect opportunity for owners of Aston Martin racing cars to compete on a level playing field on some of the very best racing circuits with the full support of the factory.

Marek’s co-driver, Chris Porritt, added: “Most of my GT4 experience with Aston Martin has been at the Nürburgring, but Oulton Park is my home track and while I’ve raced my own cars there many times, I’ve never had the opportunity in an Aston Martin. The standard of racing in the series so far has been extremely high so Marek and I will have our work cut out to keep up with the front runners.”

The Aston Martin Vantage GT4 is a production-based race car eligible for all FIA GT4 races as well as other race series around the world. 2010 successes to date include class wins in the Dubai, Nürburgring and Spa 24 Hours, numerous class wins in the Nürburgring VLN endurance series and four wins out of six in the FIA GT4 European Cup.

Aston Martin’s Head of Motorsport, David King commented: “The Aston Martin Vantage N24/GT4 has been the outstanding performer in GT4 and other classes around the world since 2006. Whether in 24 hour races or short sprints, its performance, reliability and ease of handling deliver class wins and podiums time after time.

“The Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain, in its first year, is providing a focal point for our customers to make a first step into GT4 racing with high quality events on challenging circuits with comprehensive organisation and technical support from Aston Martin Racing.”

  • Porsche will once again showcase an exciting array of new, iconic and historic models at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2 to 4 July.

In keeping with the Festival’s chosen Viva Veloce theme, the Porsche Museumin Stuttgart will be bringing some of the victorious sports cars from the Targa Florio road race in Sicily, as well as the Porsche 917 to celebrate a significant Porsche motorsport anniversary – 40 years since the 1970 win at Le Mans. The rare 804 Grand Prix car from 1962 will also be demonstrated, as part of commemorations of 60 years of the F1 World Championship.

These iconic models will share the spotlight with some all-new Porsche stars. The Festival sees the debut of the fastest-ever Porsche, the 620 hp GT2 RS, in the Supercar Run alongside the new GT3 RS. The new Porsche Cayenne range will also be on display, and in action, in the Porsche Experience area.

Porsche successes at Le Mans, the Targa Florio and in Formula One celebrated

With an unbeaten record of 16 victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours race, the reputation of Porsche has been founded on success in the demanding high pressure, high speed motor sport environment.

The iconic Porsche 917 scored the first Le Mans win for the marque in 1970, and this year Porsche celebrates the 40th anniversary of this achievement by demonstrating the number 23 winner at Goodwood.

The Sixties and Seventies was a golden age for sports car endurance racing, and Porsche drivers climbed the top step of the podium at many venues. With more than 6,000 curves and countless climbs, the 720 kilometre Targa Florio course in Sicilian Madonie was one of the greatest challenges in international motor sport for many decades. To commemorate the feats of the cars and drivers in the renowned ‘Targa’, the Porsche Museum is bringing to Goodwood the 908/02 Spyder that won the race in 1969 together with the 908/03 Spyder that was victorious in 1970.

Although indelibly associated with sports car racing, Porsche has enjoyed success at the very pinnacle of motorsport in Formula 1. The peak of this involvement was undoubtedly a hat trick of World Championship victories between 1984 – 1986, achieved with the 1.5-litre 900 hp TAG Turbo engine designed by Porsche. However, in 1961 the Stuttgart marque entered its own chassis in Formula 1, and for the 1962 season the company developed the 804 – powered by a flat eight cylinder 1.5-litre 180 hp engine. Driven by the American driver Dan Gurney, the 804 scored its first victory at the 1962 French GP and quickly followed this with another triumph at the Solitude track in Germany.

    Debut of 911 GT2 RS

The Sunday Times Supercar Run is a prime attraction at the Festival of Speed, showcasing the fastest and most exclusive road-going sports cars. This year’s event will mark the debut of the latest Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which arrives in UK showrooms in September. With 620 hp and the capability to lap the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in Germany in 7 min 18 secs, the GT2 RS is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche. With power up by 90 hp and weight down by 70 kg in comparison with the prior 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of 452 hp / tonne, by far the best in class, and marks the summit in the 911 range.

Joining the GT2 RS in the parade of power will be the new 911 GT3 RS. Offering an engine power increase to 450 hp, lower weight, shorter transmission ratios and a chassis optimised to an even higher standard, the 911 GT3 RS sets the foundation for homologating the racing version of the 911 GT3. The GT3 RS thus provides the key ingredients for extending the unparalleled racing record of Porsche and continues the series of absolute, uncompromised, motor sport-oriented editions of the 911 that are homologated for road use and which can trace their roots back to the classic Carrera RS 2.7 of 1973.

The all-new Cayenne and the Porsche Experience

The new generation Porsche Cayenne range is a trend-setter in terms of efficiency and performance and, compared with the former models, offers an increase in fuel economy of up to 23 per cent.

The highlight of the new line-up is the technically sophisticated parallel full hybrid drive-train which combines the sporting performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder. The ultimate in performance driving experiences continues to be delivered by the 500 hp Cayenne Turbo.

The driver-oriented chassis of the new Cayenne has been designed to combine sports car handling on the road with the added versatility of being able to cover ground quickly, regardless of the terrain.

Visitors to the Festival of Speed will be able to experience Porsche power personally courtesy of Driving Consultants from the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone, who will be demonstrating the performance and handling of the new Cayenne on a specially designed dynamics course laid out in the Porsche Driving Experience area at Goodwood. The grass-surfaced course around which the 400 hp V8-engined Cayenne S models will power is intended to demonstrate perfectly the outstanding dynamic ability of this immensely versatile Porsche.

Porsche enthusiasts visiting Goodwood will be pleased to learn that there are many more examples of the marque, and former factory race drivers, participating in the Festival of Speed. Not least amongst these will be Richard Attwood, former F1 driver and 1970 Le Mans winner, who will be taking time out of his daily schedule as a Porsche Driving Consultant, at the Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone, to rekindle old flames in the paddock!

  • McLaren is celebrating 20 years the most sought after, astounding street racecar ever built – the McLaren F1.

Twenty years back in the year 1990, Gordon Murray led a team of McLaren that started work for the first time on the mighty McLaren F1.

Though the official launch of this supercar only took place on 28th May 1992, the development work began in 1990.

To mark the occasion McLaren has released a set of images of McLaren F1, which we bring to you followed by the official press release.

    Official Press release:

    • McLaren F1 is still the fastest normally aspirated production road car in the world.
    • McLaren F1 GTR secured McLaren’s position as the only car manufacturer  to win the Formula 1 World Championship, Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours
    • McLaren F1 was first production road car to use a full carbon fibre monocoque
    • 20 years of carbon pioneering behind McLaren’s launch of the new MP4-12C in 2011

In 1988, McLaren took the decision to expand from Formula One and design and build “the finest sports car the world had ever seen”. In March 1990 the team that was to create the F1 came together for the first time.  In its 20th anniversary year, the McLaren F1 is considered by most people to be one of the greatest cars of all time.   Its exclusivity, technical innovation, racing provenance, revolutionary packaging and extraordinary driving experience have made it an icon.

Just two years later, the McLaren F1 road car was launched to the world on 28th May 1992 in Monaco, with the first production car delivered to its proud owner in December 1993.

The F1 defines the McLaren road car DNA
McLaren is a carbon pioneer. The McLaren Formula 1 team was the first team in Formula 1 to use a carbon fibre chassis in 1981. Nine years on, these Formula 1 techniques were developed to create the carbon monocoque for the McLaren F1: the resulting structure weighed just 100kg whilst offering the highest levels of strength and safety. The bare carbon fibre passenger doors weighed just 7 kg each (which included the weight of the side intrusion beam).

The F1 defined the McLaren road car DNA: low weight, low polar moment of inertia, clever packaging, superb quality and innovative design, resulting in an outstanding driving experience.

The F1 bristles with innovative design. The central driving position, which ensures superb visibility and no compromise on control positions for the driver; the pannier side lockers providing unprecedented levels of luggage capacity in a car of this type; the patented suspension system to provide both control and ride quality.

The F1 was launched at a price of £540,000 in 1994, and over the course of the next four years 64 F1, 5 F1 LM and 3 F1 GT road cars were produced, together with 28 F1 GTR race cars.  An additional six prototypes were produced.

In October 2008, a delivery mileage F1 was sold at auction for £2.53 million, underlining the F1’s status as one of the great motoring icons.

Taking a road car to the track
In 1994, after pressure from owners, McLaren developed a racing version of the F1 road car to run in the FIA GT1 category in the 1995 season. Despite a design and development period of just 3 months, the F1 GTR swept all before it, winning not only the 1995 GT1 Championship, but also the 24 Heures du Mans on its debut. McLaren not only won, but dominated the rain-soaked endurance race, finishing in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th places.

The Le Mans winning F1 GTR was piloted by J.J. Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya.  Lehto’s performance through the night on a treacherous circuit has been hailed as one of the great racing performances of all time, taking up to 10 seconds a lap off the cars in front of him. The winning car is proudly displayed at the McLaren Technology Centre in exactly the condition that it finished Le Mans in 1995.

Thus the F1 GTR secured for McLaren a unique position in motor racing history, as the only manufacturer to win the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours.

McLaren decided to celebrate the extraordinary result at Le Mans by creating 5 F1 LM road cars, one for each F1 that finished this most grueling of races. Launched in McLaren Orange, as used on Bruce McLaren’s race cars the 1960s and 70s, and with a derestricted race engine, the LM is not only the most powerful of all F1 variants, but also the most valuable. Formula 1 fans will recognize this as the car which Lewis Hamilton has set his heart on owning.

In 1997, the final iteration of the F1 road car project was built. The F1 GT was built solely to fulfil the new homologation rules for the 1997 GTR race car, of which 10 examples were produced in the same year. Both the GT road car and the 1997 GTR race cars became known as the ‘Longtail’, because of the longer front and rear overhangs for improved downforce when racing. Although McLaren only had to build one car for homologation purposes, two more were built following requests from existing F1 owners.

In 1998, with a total of 106 of all variants built and its production run complete, the McLaren F1 went on to achieve its greatest feat outside competitive motorsport.  McLaren development and race driver Andy Wallace took XP5, the fifth and final prototype F1 with some 45,000 hard test miles on the clock, to the Ehra-Lessien proving ground in Germany.  It was here on 31st March 1998 that the howling V12 propelled him to an amazing 240.1mph. Over 12 years later, this remains a world record for a naturally aspirated production car.

    Back to the F1 future

On 27th April 2010, McLaren Automotive celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the start of the F1 programme by inviting F1 owners past and present to a celebration dinner at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. The following day, after an insight into McLaren Automotive’s exciting plans for a future range of high performance sports cars, the owners were treated to a display of  21 McLaren F1 road and race cars, the largest number of F1 cars ever assembled in one place.

Ron Dennis, McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman, said:
“The F1 is a technological tour-de-force and a real triumph in terms of packaging and design.  Whether endurance racing or on road, it is supremely fast, agile and yet comfortable. Its styling is enduring and will never fade. I enjoy driving mine more today than ever before because I find its technical purity highly satisfying; the F1 remains one of McLaren’s proudest achievements.”

With the launch of McLaren Automotive as a new car company announced in March 2010, the company begins production planning for an entire range of high performance sports, designed and built in-house by McLaren. The first in this range will be the MP4-12C.

The 12C shares much of the design philosophy that was applied to the McLaren F1. Starting with the new car’s MonoCell, a one-piece carbon fibre chassis that is stiff, light and ensures occupant safety, every component has been designed to ensure the car is lightweight, nimble and able to deliver ultimate performance.  When the 12C launches in 2011, it will be the first in the ‘core’ sports car sector to offer a carbon chassis, and the first road car ever with a one-piece, moulded carbon chassis.

From the outset, the 12C has been ‘designed around the driver’.  Outstanding aerodynamic efficiency and bespoke technologies including Proactive Chassis Control, Seamless Shift dual-clutch Gearbox (SSG), Brake Steer and the 12C’s unique Airbrake feature in a car which has been developed using Formula 1 simulator technology.   The new high performance sports car from McLaren will be sold initially through 35 retailers in 19 different countries around the world from Spring 2011.

McLaren’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of the F1 will continue throughout the year.

McLaren enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see both the F1 and 12C together at this summer’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, which takes place at the famous English motorsport venue from 2-4 July 2010.

  • Zagato Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa

         by Aman Chaudhry

Lake Como in Italy has seen many historic cars at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este each year and the last weekend was no exception. It saw the official unveiling of the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa race car. Zagato, one of Italy’s top coach builders and Alfa Romeo celebrated their 90 year collaboration and also 100 years of common racing history.

The TZ3 is built around a mono shell carbon fiber tubular chassis along with a tubular frame and aluminum body sell making it 4.3 meters long, 1.9 m wide and 1.2 m wide while keeping the sports cars’ weight at 850 kg.

Under the hood you will find a 4.2-liter V8 engine with 420 horsepower, which used dry sump lubrication and allows manual adjustable calibration. A 6-speed sequential gearbox is attached which makes the TZ3 cover 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and offers a top speed of 300 km/h.

This is a full-blown race car with OMP developing the suspension, WRC carbon fiber seats and steering wheel and Pirelli supplied the 18 inch slick Pzero tyres.

The race car was commissioned by the German Alfa Romeo Zagato Collector Martin Kapp.

The TZ3 Corsa is not a design exercise. It does not take inspiration only from the 90 year collaboration between the two brands, neither only from the Milanese conjunction between Alfa Romeo and Zagato. The TZ3 Corsa is a race car, honouring 100 years of races and victories across the whole 20th century,” stated the press release.
