All-new Mercedes Benz C-Class DR 520
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsMercedes-Benz UK has launched an exclusive new model, the C-Class DR 520 with more power and performance than any other C-Class. Only 20 units of this car will be available, and it is sold exclusively through the company’s Specialist Products division at Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands, Surrey.
Based on the high-performance C 63 AMG, the DR 520 has a performance upgrade and boasts 520 hp and 650 Nm of torque, a 60 hp and 50 Nm advantage over than the standard C 63 AMG. The DR 520 Saloon can reach 0-62 mph in just 4.1 seconds with the Estate achieving the same in 4.2 seconds, and both are electronically limited to a top speed of 187 mph.
The AMG Performance Pack Plus is fitted to the DR 520 as standard and features AMG’s high-performance braking system with red calipers, with the addition of engine upgrades in the form of forged pistons, newly-developed connecting rods and a revised crankshaft, as well as an AMG Carbon Fibre rear spoiler for the Saloon.
Available with a black or white matt wrap and complimented by Titanium finish alloy wheels, grille and discreet DR 520 badging on the wing and the boot lid, the DR 520 combines stealthy looks with potent performance.

Inside, the sports seats are upholstered in leather and exclusive Alcantara finished with red or white contrast stitching, as is the dashboard and upper door panels. The multi-function AMG Performance steering wheel is clad in Nappa leather and Alcantara.
Nigel Unsworth, Specialist Products Division Manager commented: “We wanted to launch the Specialist Products Division with something unique – and the DR 520 fits the bill perfectly. Mercedes-Benz World is located at Brooklands, and there’s a proud history of ‘Brooklands Specials’ being sold here over the years.
The DR 520 – which is dyno-rated at 520 hp – is our chance to create an exclusive model in the UK. It’s a great opportunity for us to offer our customers who enjoy sports and supercars a bespoke car with even more performance than the already very successful C 63 AMG. And as well as the increased performance, it looks incredible, too.”
The DR 520 costs £9,995 above the standard C 63 AMG price, making the DR 520 Saloon £62,430 OTR and the Estate £63,680 OTR. The cars are also backed by a three-year, 60,000 mileage warranty.

Mercedes-AMG Builds The Best Sports Engine
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsThe AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine took away two top accolades as part of the coveted “International Engine of the Year Awards 2010″: the high-revving naturally aspirated engine developing up to 386 kW/525 hp comfortably took top spot in the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 litres” categories. This is the second year running that the eight-cylinder engine from AMG has beaten off the competition.
Bearing the internal designation M 156, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with its displacement of 6208 cubic centimetres produces between 457 hp and 525 hp, develops up to 630 Nm of torque and features in various AMG models, including the C 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG and the SL 63 AMG. The basis for the agile power delivery is the consistent technology transfer from motorsport, which has been an inseparable part of the company philosophy at Mercedes-AMG for over four decades. The verdict of juror Jason Cammisa from Automobile Magazine (USA): “The absolute epitome of a German hot rod V8 engine!” Carl Cunanan, editor of C! Magazine (USA): For its fantastic engine sound alone it deserved first place!”
The great potential of the award-winning AMG V8 is also reflected in its character-packed, powerful evolution: the engine – dubbed the M 159 – for the SLS AMG super sports car is based on the M 156; in the gullwing the AMG high-revving naturally aspirated engine develops 571 hp and delivers maximum torque of 650 Nm. Another outstanding vehicle is the C 63 AMG with Performance Package Plus and maximum output of 487 hp. The overhauled features inside the engine are responsible for the increase in output: the forged pistons adopted from the SLS AMG together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft make the engine three kilograms lighter. The reduced inertia enhances the agility of the eight-cylinder unit, which offers even more exhilarating responsiveness.

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS AND SPRINTER RETAIN THEIR FLEET WORLD HONOURS
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsThe Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been crowned Best Luxury Car at the 2010 Fleet World Honours and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter scooped Best Large Van. Both vehicles retained their awards from 2009, whilst Sprinter now enjoys a three-year reign.
The Best Luxury Car award for the S-Class was presented to Adrian Freeman, Regional Corporate Sales Manager for Mercedes-Benz UKat a special ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall on Tuesday 18 May.
Steve Moody, Editor of Fleet World commented: “The luxury sector is about to become even more competitive, but all new entrants have one model to beat, a model that continues to define the very best in corporate motoring and luxury: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. New more efficient engines have made the line-up even more formidable than ever before.”
The Mercedes-Benz S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which accounts for 92 per cent of fleet sales, returns an impressive 37.2 mpg on the combined cycle whilst emitting just 199 g/km of CO2 and later in 2010 will become even cleaner and more efficient. With the introduction of the S 350 BlueTEC, Mercedes-Benz will be the first manufacturer to offer a vehicle that already meets EU 6 standards that don’t come into effect in the UK until 2014.
The unique BlueTEC technology significantly reduces the only gas constituents that are higher in diesel engines than in petrol engines, therefore reducing emissions and improving efficiency.
Many features of the S-Class are unique and remain unrivalled by competitors. New safety features making the S-Class one of the safest cars on the road.
Adaptive Highbeam is now standard on the S-Class and uses eight stages of graduation from dipped to main beam to ensure that maximum visible range from the headlights is available at all time, without dazzling other road users. Another unique standard feature of the S-Class is Attention Assist which monitors over 70 parameters to detect the onset of drowsiness so it can alert the driver to take a break, crucially, before they fall asleep.
Torque vectoring brakes ensure precise cornering without compromising driving dynamics, while Distronic Plus significantly reduces driver strain in start stop traffic through the use of long and medium range radars by keeping the car a set distance from the vehicle in front.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to impress and be the envy of the boardroom as the halo company car for others to aspire to.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter also delighted the judges, winning the Best Large Van award.
Steve Bridge, Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales and Marketing Director said: “The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has held the accolade of Best Large Van since 2008, and we’re thrilled it has retained its title again in 2010. The vehicle has repeatedly set standards by offering the van fleet market low whole life costs, excellent fuel economy and a firm commitment to safety.”
Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to achieve Euro 5 – as well as being cleaner, the new Sprinters are smoother, quieter and more powerful, along with being significantly cheaper to run. And, with low fuel consumption and low emissions becoming increasingly important considerations for the van fleet buyer, the Sprinter can also be fitted with the ECO-Start system. This innovative system saves fuel and reduces emissions by automatically cutting the engine whenever the vehicle is stationary for more than three seconds and then re-starts it as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed.
All Sprinters come equipped with class and industry leading levels of passive and active safety. The Adaptive ESP (Electronic Stability Program) anti-skid system constantly monitors the vehicles adjusting load, centre of gravity and yaw angles and dynamically adjusts the brakes, supplying maximum effect, while the vehicle is on the move.

BMW Gran Coupe Concept
by Aman Chaudhry24 CommentsBMW did not want to stay behind when it came to four-door coupes, so they have brought in a brand new concept called the Gran Coupe. With competetiors already in the field BMW has decided to take the Gran Coupe concept up against Mercedes-Benz CLS, VW CC, Porsche Panamera and Maserati Quattroporte.
BMW’s Gran Coupe concept has already made many heads turn towards itself at the ongoing Beijing International Auto Show.
BMW claims that the concept has been specially designed to mix both the Gran Turismo and a high performance sports car. Another interesting fact about the design of the Gran Coupé is the striking resemblance it bears with the next-gen 6 series. The sporty powerful looking concept is almost 5 meters in length and about 1.4 meters tall, which makes it almost 100 mm lower than both the 5 and 7 series sedans. The flat silhouette on the long wheelbase, which is a typical of BMW sedans with the coupe style roof, is what we like the most. Added to that are frameless doors with LED lighting all around and it’s difficult to take your eyes off this beauty.
“It’s true that the Gran Coupe points to a specific model, a saloon with the presence and elegance of a 7-series but a more dynamic, sporty character: much more of a driver’s car,” says BMW design chief, Adrian van Hooydonk. “We’re convinced that we should make a car like this,” the designer added.
Unfortunately no further details regarding the interiors or the engine have been revealed by BMW so far, although Autocar quoted that the production version of the Gran Coupe will appear in 2012 and the car will share the same platform with the 5-series and 7-series.

The all new 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsVolkswagen Phaeton has freshly been given a facelift, a nip here and a tuck there and is ready for it’s unveiling today at the Beijing Auto Show.
VW is trying (almost desperately) to boost its luxury car sales in the market with its competitors like Mercedes- Benz and BMW already marking territory. The history hasn’t been great either for the Phaeton as this ‘people’s car’ did not quite match up to the sales in Europe and subsequently had to be dropped out of America.
The first thing to notice in the new 2011 Phaeton is the new front end flaunting the typical VW front grille, LED running lights and bi-xenon headlamps.
A subtle change in the front wings and the bonnet can be noticed along with the chrome strips on the bumper.
The Phaeton MY2011 comes packed with technology and gadgets including a brand new steering wheel. There’s a Google maps enables satellite navigation system, roadside recognition and four-zone climate control system. This all-wheel drive system comes with adjustable air suspension and Continuous Damping Control (CDC)
Buyers can choose from six, eight or twelve- cylinder engines ranging in power from 240 hp to 450 hp. The base train is supposed to be a V6 with 280 PS of torque and can attain 0-60 in 8.2 seconds with a top speed of 147 mph.

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break
by Aman Chaudhry4 CommentsMercedes Benz is planning to preview the new 2011 CLS four-door coupe, which is a Shooting Break concept at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition from April 25th to may 2nd. This next generation CLS with four doors and a rear cargo area sure looks like a promising concept. Though we seriously hope that the production car in the future will also look like these images.
It is understood that the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break will be directly compared to the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo.
Mercedes-Benz has tried to explain in detail why the name is spelt at ‘shooting break’ and not ‘brake’ with reference to breaking a horse that draws a carriage. . “Break, or the homonym Brake, was the name once given to carriages used to ‘break’ in wild horses and also to restrict (or ‘brake’) their urge to move, so that they could be put to use as work horses,” Mercedes-Benz explains. “Any such vehicle that was used when going out shooting was called a Shooting Brake or Shooting Break. In the 1960s and 1970s, motorized Shooting Breaks were popular in Great Britain.”
This next gen CLS is expected to be poerwed with a turbocharged 3.5 litre V6 engine with more than 300 horsepower and another 4.6 litre V8 with 435 hp and over 400 lb torque. The seven speed automatic transmission engines supposedly show a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency.
For the guys who have a thing for power there’s a 5.5 litre V8, complete with direct injection and turbo offered in the AMG model. No prizes for guessing that this monster engine churns out close to 563 hp and 664 lb torque.
The exterior is very appealing, a long bonnet that flows through the rear. The front grille has full LED headlamps on the sides.
Luxurious interiors have abundance of natural wood and leather. Huge center console dominates the inside along with a panoramic glass roof.
