Alfa Giulia GTAm Tops Alfa Voting Poll
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsAlthough Alfa Romeo has to date created more than 70 models in its rich 100 year history, it all came down to a battle between just two iconic Alfas in a poll of fans’ favourites, initiated to celebrate the Italian marque’s centenary year.
And it was the Alfa Giulia GTAm that came top of the poll, beating the 8C Competizione supercar to the chequered flag with less than one percent more of the vote.
The Alfa Giulia GTAm, which gained 20.4 per cent of the overall tally, derived from the standard 1750 GT Veloce production model, and secured its place in the Alfa Romeo elite by winning the 1970 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Dutchman Toine Hezemans. The votes for this poll were collected from admirers and owners – known as Alfisti – who submitted photos of their Alfas to the alfacentenary.co.uk website to create a unique piece of mosaic artwork.
The GTAm and Alfa’s current supercar, the 8C Competizione, led the way against a shortlist of classics including the 2900 B Le Mans, Alfasud and the 156 GTA.
A worthy runner-up with 19.8 per cent, the 8C Competizione – worth more than £123,000 – debuted as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003 and went on to be produced in 2008 as a limited edition model of just 500 examples and selling out almost immediately. The car’s name derives from Alfa’s world famous 8 cylinder (8C) engine and the marque’s racing pedigree.
The Alfa Spider Duetto, widely regarded as a design classic, finished in third place with 16.01 per cent of the vote. This car was first launched in 1966 and famously starred in the legendary film The Graduate in 1967, alongside Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.
Alfa Romeo UK Brand Communications manager, Damien Dally, says: “The Giulia GTAm was a great Alfa and a deserved winner. It’s really interesting to see how people voted in the poll. We all have our favourites which is testament to the fantastic cars Alfa Romeo has produced over the past century.”
The latest five-door Alfa Giulietta model, which takes styling cues from the iconic 8C Competizione, is now on sale in dealerships across the UK.

Alvis to re-introduce its Original 1930 Model
by Aman Chaudhry2 CommentsAlvis, a Classic car Company recently announced that it is planning a huge market comeback by re-introducing its famous model from year 1930. Alvis plans to make the comeback by showing it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The 2010 Alvis has been built be the aid of latest computer aided techonology and manufacturing using the original technical drawings of the pre-war classic1930 model.
War stopped the production of the 1930 model but there’s proof that 77 chassis were left stranded for production that never got transformed into cars.
“The 4.3 Litre Alvis was the fastest non-supercharged production car of its day, and the continuation series will live up to that heritage. Manufactured from the original drawings, the 4.3 Litre Alvis in-line six cylinder engine will be faithful to the 1936 design, in maintaining all its period character and quality, yet by utilising modern technology it will be emission compliant. Moreover, by using modern materials, fuel injection and engine management, this powerplant will deliver even more horsepower,” stated the press release.
Details of the latest 2010 4.3 –liter Alvis continuation series will be announced later. Starting price is £170k and it will be on display at the Alvis Goodwood stands.
“This is part of our overall business plan,” said Alan Stote, Red Triangle and Alvis Car Company proprietor: “to maintain service to existing Alvis owners but also to reintroduce selected authentic Alvis models in line with the vision of the Alvis Board all those years ago. Visitors to Goodwood will be able to see the first stages of that plan.”

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS AND SPRINTER RETAIN THEIR FLEET WORLD HONOURS
by Aman ChaudhryNo CommentsThe Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been crowned Best Luxury Car at the 2010 Fleet World Honours and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter scooped Best Large Van. Both vehicles retained their awards from 2009, whilst Sprinter now enjoys a three-year reign.
The Best Luxury Car award for the S-Class was presented to Adrian Freeman, Regional Corporate Sales Manager for Mercedes-Benz UKat a special ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall on Tuesday 18 May.
Steve Moody, Editor of Fleet World commented: “The luxury sector is about to become even more competitive, but all new entrants have one model to beat, a model that continues to define the very best in corporate motoring and luxury: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. New more efficient engines have made the line-up even more formidable than ever before.”
The Mercedes-Benz S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which accounts for 92 per cent of fleet sales, returns an impressive 37.2 mpg on the combined cycle whilst emitting just 199 g/km of CO2 and later in 2010 will become even cleaner and more efficient. With the introduction of the S 350 BlueTEC, Mercedes-Benz will be the first manufacturer to offer a vehicle that already meets EU 6 standards that don’t come into effect in the UK until 2014.
The unique BlueTEC technology significantly reduces the only gas constituents that are higher in diesel engines than in petrol engines, therefore reducing emissions and improving efficiency.
Many features of the S-Class are unique and remain unrivalled by competitors. New safety features making the S-Class one of the safest cars on the road.
Adaptive Highbeam is now standard on the S-Class and uses eight stages of graduation from dipped to main beam to ensure that maximum visible range from the headlights is available at all time, without dazzling other road users. Another unique standard feature of the S-Class is Attention Assist which monitors over 70 parameters to detect the onset of drowsiness so it can alert the driver to take a break, crucially, before they fall asleep.
Torque vectoring brakes ensure precise cornering without compromising driving dynamics, while Distronic Plus significantly reduces driver strain in start stop traffic through the use of long and medium range radars by keeping the car a set distance from the vehicle in front.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to impress and be the envy of the boardroom as the halo company car for others to aspire to.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter also delighted the judges, winning the Best Large Van award.
Steve Bridge, Mercedes-Benz Vans Sales and Marketing Director said: “The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has held the accolade of Best Large Van since 2008, and we’re thrilled it has retained its title again in 2010. The vehicle has repeatedly set standards by offering the van fleet market low whole life costs, excellent fuel economy and a firm commitment to safety.”
Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to achieve Euro 5 – as well as being cleaner, the new Sprinters are smoother, quieter and more powerful, along with being significantly cheaper to run. And, with low fuel consumption and low emissions becoming increasingly important considerations for the van fleet buyer, the Sprinter can also be fitted with the ECO-Start system. This innovative system saves fuel and reduces emissions by automatically cutting the engine whenever the vehicle is stationary for more than three seconds and then re-starts it as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed.
All Sprinters come equipped with class and industry leading levels of passive and active safety. The Adaptive ESP (Electronic Stability Program) anti-skid system constantly monitors the vehicles adjusting load, centre of gravity and yaw angles and dynamically adjusts the brakes, supplying maximum effect, while the vehicle is on the move.
